Frequently Asked Questions

What is art therapy?

Art therapy is an integrative mental health and human services profession that enriches the lives of individuals, families, and communities through active art-making, creative process, applied psychological theory, and human experience within a psychotherapeutic relationship.

Art therapy, facilitated by a professional art therapist, effectively supports personal and relational treatment goals as well as community concerns. Art therapy is used to improve cognitive and sensorimotor functions, foster self-esteem and self-awareness, cultivate emotional resilience, promote insight, enhance social skills, reduce and resolve conflicts and distress, and advance societal and ecological change (American Art Therapy Association).

How does online art therapy work?

During our first online therapy session we will get to know each other, speak about why you are seeking therapy, and what your issues or goals are. Next we will talk about materials. Ideally you can use what you have at home. For example you might have magazines, glue, scissors and paper or a piece of cardboard. Each session is just as unique as every individual and it is always about you, my client.

I would like to try art therapy but I am not an artist. Can I try it anyway?

One of the greatest misconceptions about art therapy is that a person must have skills and knowledge about art supplies or that they must have artistic talent. Our therapeutic relationship is primary and the art supplies and creative process are tools to get to you to a deeper, non-verbaI level of communication. Moving paint across the page will help regulate your nervous system. Creating shows you with your own hands how you have the ability to change whatever you want to. I am there holding space for us and witnessing. I will also be your guide as far as materials go.

If I am unfamiliar with art materials can you show me how to use them?

Yes, of course. I have a master’s degree in art therapy in which I learned how to use different materials for varying diagnoses and I also have a bachelor’s degree in art studio and am a practicing artist.
